According to the report, the bearded man, Nate Reynolds, was supervising a kayaking session in Rochester, New York.
He got a sudden call when his one student was attacked by the beaver.
Reynolds turned up immediately there and found that the beaver was pulling his student, Michael Cavanaugh, into the water very forcibly.
The animal released the victim only after he got beaten by Reynolds very severely using a paddle.
Beavers are vegetarians and tend to only attack humans if they have rabies, which medical staff treated Cavanaugh for as a precaution.
