Bears trade LB Jon Bostic to Patriots

The new Bears regime was willing to part with Bostic because of his injury issues.

Earlier Monday the Bears traded Jared Allen to the Panthers, also for a sixth-round pick.

Bostic led the team in tackles last season with 127, according to coaches’ review.

Pro Football Focus did not hold back on its criticism of Bostic entering the 2015 season: “Another question mark in their new defense is at inside linebacker, where neither Mason Foster [nor] Jon Bostic, who graded poorly in coverage in 2014, and poorly against the run in 2013, stand out as capable starters”. They’ve got a number of options in that regard, but hybrid linebacker Dekoda Watson was a recent addition and Tavon Wilson is sixth on the safety depth chart after being a healthy scratch yesterday against the Jaguars.

Along those lines, Spotrac pointed out the Bears cleared $358,254 from their 2015 cap with the Bostic trade and $942,381 from their 2016 cap.

The Bears selected Bostic in the second round of the 2013 draft and he started 17 games for them over the last two years. They also traded for Martin, tight end Michael Williams, offensive lineman Ryan Groy, tight end Asante Cleveland and wide receiver Jalen Saunders.

Hard to see how Jon Bostic fits for the Patriots in a defense where Jerod Mayo already isn’t playing enough. Bostic played under Meyer at Florida, so I’m sure he turned to his friend to get some inside info on him. Furthermore, Bostic never really appeared to have a future playing for a team in the middle of a rebuild. He missed the first three games of the season with an ankle injury.

The Bears reportedly parted ways with Jon Bostic on Monday
