Beast Mode goes silent as Seattle puts Lynch on retired list

“Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch announced his intentions to retire during Super Bowl 50 with a single Tweet”, the team’s press release read.

It’s official. The Seahawks have placed Marshawn Lynch on the reserve/retired list, which means his $11M+ salary comes off the books and Seattle is now only on the hook for $5M in dead money. The move reduces the Seahawks’ roster to 90 players.

Seattle acquired him in a 2010 trade with Buffalo, which selected him out of California with the 12th overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.

Though Lynch had yet to turn in his retirement paperwork, coach Pete Carroll reiterated last week the running back was “committed to being retired”.

The team officially placed Lynch on the reserved/retired list on Thursday, pretty much ending his National Football League career. On Tuesday the GM told Seattle’s KJR-AM radio the Seahawks didn’t have to wait for Lynch to submit those papers to put him on the reserve/retired list.

If Lynch changes his mind about retirement, the Seahawks retain his rights.

All of Lynch’s remaining signing bonus ($5M) will accelerate into 2016 and the Seahawks will be hit with a $5M dead money charge. It merely makes his retirement more official – and, more pragmatically, clarifies Seattle’s salary-cap situation for this year.
