The Associated Press reported Irsay spent $2.2 million at an auction Friday to buy Ringo Starr’s first Ludwig drum set. This drum kit is special to him because it completes his Beatles set of instruments, as he already owns guitars from three of the other Beatles – Paul McCartney, the late George Harrison and John Lennon.

He said: “Finally, after 45 years, The Beatles are together again”.

Meanwhile, Irsay soon could be giving his head coach and/or G.M. the Pete Best treatment.

Part of the sale proceeds will go to the Lotus Foundation, founded by Starr and his wife Barbara Bach, which funds and promotes charitable projects aimed at advancing social welfare.

The auction of Starr memorabilia concludes Saturday.

A drum kit Ringo Starr used to record some of the Beatles’ early hits has sold for US$2.2 million (NZ$3.26 million) at auction.

Starr, now 75, used the kit in more than 200 performances between May 1963 and February 1964 including She Loves You and All My Loving.

The lucky buyer is thought to be the owner of the American Football team Indianapolis Colts, Jim Irsay.

Mr Irsay, a known collector and huge music fan, also owns famous guitars played by Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton and has 175 classic guitars in his collection.
