Following the news Martin had passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday (08.03.16) at the age of 90, the former Beatles musician spoke of his great love for the man known as the “Fifth Beatle” and praised him for the impact he had on his career and life. The Beatles were Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Star and George Harrison. “I brought the song “Yesterday’ to a recording session, and the guys in the band suggested that I sing it solo and accompany myself on guitar”, McCartney said”.

“He guided the career of The Beatles with such skill and good humour that he became a true friend to me and my family”.

And in that bit of “A Day in the Life” you can hear a bit of what made Martin the fifth Beatle.

Martin worked with The Beatles from their earliest days and was the man who gave them their first record deal in 1962.

5. The decision to overindulge the Beatles While one could hardly say no to the world’s most successful recording artists, it’s hard to imagine an EMI staff producer like Ron Richards affixing “I Feel Fine” feedback to the beginning of one of the Hollies’ early records or Mickie Most risking a Herman’s Hermits hit by starting it with a fade in like ” Eight Days a Week”. Everything that had seemed natural to me in recordings became suspect, not in a bad way, but in the way that Santa Claus is not real but it’s still awfully nice that your parents bought you GI Joe with kung-fu grip. “Sometimes when you’re in a studio you take quite a long time to get a decent quartet sound to get the balance right but with George it happened within minutes”, says van der Werff.

The Beatles are obviously the Beatles, and that certainly lifts your chances of becoming George Martin.

Spinning the words behind the dramatic series Game of Thrones, Martin took to his blog to reassure fans he is alive and well, after he was mistakenly confused with the late Beatles producer, George Martin.

But George Martin was not just another music producer.

On record, you can hear The Beatles’ minds wandering - songs switch pace because they feel like it, or have daft count-ins for no discernible reason, and have unusual instruments thrown in just because. He also produced two James Bond themes – Shirley Bassey’s Goldfinger and Live And Let Die by Paul McCartney and Wings. I said, “Oh no George, we are a rock and roll band and I don’t think it’s a good idea ” . Noting their inquisitiveness about both the technical and musical sides of recording, Mr. Martin ignored the traditional barrier between performers and technicians and invited the group into the control room, where he showed them how the recording equipment at EMI’s Abbey Road studios worked.
