Rooney has scored just once in the Premier League since April 4 and is also approaching a full YEAR without a league goal away from Old Trafford.

They were returning a favour after Wayne Rooney presented the remaining four members of 1D with a personalised Manchester United shirt back in July this year.

“He’s an out-and-out goalscorer, but I think with Wayne, he’s proved he can step into the midfield and play“.

“Giggsy was a prime example”.

Gerrard told the BBC: “This name kept coming up to me Wayne Rooney, Wayne Rooney [and people were asking] ‘have you seen anything of him?” I think that, 10 years ago, it was all about getting five yards and crossing it. I know that I had Teddy [Sheringham], Coley [Andy Cole] or Yorkie [Dwight Yorke], players such as that, on the end of it.

Wayne Rooney faces a fitness race to play for England against Estonia on Friday after sitting out training on Tuesday.

But despite his problems at club level, Rooney has experienced the biggest high of his career on the worldwide stage after becoming England’s record goalscorer.

“He came into the England team when he was just 17, and he could hold a conversation and be around the older players even at that age”.

“He helped me a lot during my early days with England”.

“He was supposed to be a great player and there was a video going around of him scoring goals for Everton’s academy. Maybe in the future we will play together again“.

Beckham reckons his former England team-mate can.

“I’d have to say Stevie”, he said, when asked who was the best England captain he’d ever played with.

“Players like that can always make you eat your words”.

“But unfortunately when you are Manchester United you can’t really have that”. Sir Alex Ferguson will also emerge from retirement to manage the GB and Ireland XI, with Carlo -Ancelotti taking charge of a Rest of the World XI which will be led by Zinedine Zidane.

The United manager deployed Rooney as a central midfielder at times last term, and that is where Beckham believes the England captain is destined to end his career.

Beckham, meanwhile, has warned current United boss Van Gaal that the club has to keep on winning trophies. “I never think we [United] will not be in contention to win trophies”.
