Beijing accuses US of ‘provocative’ flypast
“In the morning of 10 December, two US B-52 bombers entered air space over the Chinese Nansha islands and nearby areas without authorization”, Beijing’s defense ministry said, using the Chinese name for the Spratly Islands.

The Defense Ministry accused the US of deliberately raising tensions in the disputed region, where China has been aggressively asserting its claims to virtually all islands, reefs and their surrounding seas. It urged the United States “to immediately adopt measures to put an end to such kind of unsafe actions, in order not to impact the two countries’ military relations”.
The U.S. takes no official stance on sovereignty claims in the strategically crucial sea that China claims nearly in its entirety.
This week, Australia said one of its military surveillance planes had flown near disputed areas of the South China Sea.
“For this mission, there was no intention of flying to within 12 nautical miles”, said Cmdr.
Issuing a more diplomatic response, China’s Foreign Ministry on Saturday said the situation in the South China Sea was stable and that outside countries should avoid manufacturing tensions. We are looking to ensure that there is a regional consensus to ensure that there is no further militarization of these outposts. China’s defense ministry says that the bomber was warned multiple times to leave the area. The US added that it has no position on sovereignty over the South China Sea, over which Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Brunei have made various claims of sovereignty.
Beijing complained when the guided missile destroyer USS Lassen sailed within 12 nautical miles (22 kilometers) of Subi Reef in October, and China’s navy has issued warnings to USA military aircraft flying within what it considers the islands’ territorial limit.
The U.S. conducts freedom of navigation missions near the seven artificial islands that China has built up in the Spratly Island chain that are meant to signal that they are in global waters worldwide waters.
In deep down, the USA along with a host of alarmed nations, are anxious that artificial island building by China is a recipe for disaster in the long run, though.
“The United States routinely conducts B-52 training missions throughout the region, including over the South China Sea”, Wright said in an email to The Associated Press. “But certain powers have begun questioning China’s territorial and maritime rights in the region after the discovery of energy fields in the South China Sea”.
