Beijing on alert over terror threat; Western countries urge vigilance
In August, a sword-wielding man killed a woman and injured a French man in broad daylight there.

Photographs taken by a Reuters photographer showed armed policemen standing guard outside various shops.
Earlier, it was reported that the United Kingdom and U.S. embassies in Beijing had urged their citizens to be vigilant while visiting the Sanlitun area due to possible threats on or around Christmas.
Regular police tend not to carry guns in China and gun crime is uncommon.
The embassies sent out warnings to their citizens and staff, urging extra vigilance if they are in the Sanlitun district.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, Hong Lei, said that he was aware of the reports and that the government paid “great attention” to the safety of foreigners.
Beijing police also said it has started implementing a set of special security measures at places such as shopping malls where many people were expected to visit during the holiday season, after putting a “yellow” alert, the second-lowest of the four-tier warning system. Beijing police said the two victims were hit “without cause or reason”.
Westerners in Beijing have been warned they are the targets of a Christmastime terror threat.
Some rare security alerts issued for Sanlitun, one of Beijing’s busiest shopping areas for both locals and foreigners.

Beijing blamed that incident, and several other attacks in the far western region of Xinjiang, on Islamist militants.
