Both governments said citizens should remain vigilant in the area of Sanlitun, which is a bar and shopping area in the capital Beijing.
Chinese paramilitary policemen closed off roads leading into embassies in the Sanlitun district of Beijing, China. The Australian embassy soon followed suit. According to Beijing’s security regulations, the alert is the lowest on a three-tier security warning scale for large stores or shopping and entertainment areas and is issued in case of receiving threats or finding suspected explosives.
United States and British embassy personnel would not reveal further details about the reasons for the alert.
The neighborhood is home to a number of foreign embassies as well as a popular open-plan mall that offers products from global brands and some of Beijing’s best Western dining.
“If you look at previous terrorist threats in the area dating back to the ’90s, except for one incident in central Asia…no other attacks in China and central Asia have targeted Westerners”, he noted.
Taikoo Li Sanlitun, previously known as Sanlitun Village, was the scene of the killing of a young Chinese woman and the wounding of her French husband in August by a man with a sword.
