The US Embassy in Beijing issued a warning Thursday to Westerners in the Chinese capital of a possible terror threat against them on Christmas.

“US citizens are urged to exercise heightened vigilance”. The UK Embassy has issued the same guidance to British Government Staff.
The British and French embassies in the capital city have also issued similar warnings, urging their citizens to keep away from Sanlitun.
The embassies gave no further details on the nature or origins of the potential threats.
In a section of the website specifically about China, it says there is a “general threat from terrorism”, but adds that the risk of attacks is higher in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous region.
The neighborhood is home to a number of foreign embassies as well as a popular open-plan mall that offers products from worldwide brands and some of Beijing’s best Western dining.
Beijing police, in an online statement, said they had issued a “yellow” security alert for Christmas and New Year.
The police presence in Beijing was increased yesterday, with armed officers stationed in front of a main shopping complex in Sanlitun, Taikoo Li Sanlitun, and other intersections in the area. A yellow alert occurs when authorities receive information concerning a significant and approaching threat to public security.
“Relevant Chinese departments have always attached great importance to social security work, and spared no effort in protecting the safety of Chinese citizens and foreign institutes and their staff in China”, Hong said. Sanlitun saw violence in August when a sword- wielding Chinese man attacked a French man and a Chinese woman.

On Thursday afternoon, Sanlitun was swarming with camouflage-clad guards toting large black rifles. You should be particularly vigilant in Xinjiang.
