Being Afro-American QB, I scare lot of people – Newton

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will undoubtedly be named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player next Saturday at the NFL Honors ceremony. Newton is different. He’s always been one to enjoy every minute out on the field, but it’s only now becoming an issue because the Panthers are the best team in the National Football League and the public hates to love winners. “I’m an African-American QB that might scare some people because my skill set isn’t like anybody else”, he said.

But Marshall, the outspoken Jets receiver, sees it differently. The Broncos don’t just have guys who can terrorize the passer, they can also stuff the run, and no one is as scary as outside linebacker Von Miller. Jim McMahon spiked his hair and wore sunglasses and put on anti-NFL headbands and we thought of him as a cool rebel.

He thinks the same thing we think. The Panthers running game vs. the Denver defense and Peyton Manning vs. the Carolina pass defense will decide this game.

He’s been questioned for a lack of leadership.

It was 28 years ago that Doug Williams became the first African-American quarterback to start in a Super Bowl. There is a lot of money involved, but at the end of the day it’s about entertainment. “They used to speak up”, Marshall said. You have these brands like Under Armour, Nike and Beats by Dre and the yogurt thing (Dannon) that he endorsed. You know who I like the way he celebrates is Peyton.

Even when he’s just watching them on television.

With regard to Newton’s famous post-touchdown dance moves, Marshall was wishy-washy in how he felt about them.

Rice took New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning with his first pick, the second overall in the draft.

Under Armour signed Newton to his shoe and apparel deal in 2011 when he turned pro.

We have gay marriage and a black president in this country, Roe v Wade still stands and the Confederate flag no longer flies. He kind of gives the guy a handshake and goes back to the sidelines. “If I answer it truthfully, it’s going to be ‘Aw, he’s this, that.’ But I’m going to say it anyway: I don’t think people have seen what I am or what I’m trying to do”.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Newton is the NFL’s greatest dual-threat quarterback and brings boundless energy and enthusiasm to his job and relishes the spotlight – which will shine brightest on February 7 when he battles the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50. And it’s like, here I am, I’m doing exactly what I want to do, how I want to do it and when I look in the mirror, it’s me.

The Panthers have one of the best offensive lines in football and they will need it in two Sundays to win the franchise’s first Super Bowl title. “Absolutely”, Marshall said. But when he tried to elaborate on his explanation, the wideout couldn’t keep a straight face, revealing that even Marshall knew he was stretching the truth.
