Being Trump’s VP Would Make Sense for Pence

Someone like Trump, who also once supported abortion rights and who once donated money to Democrats, was always going to have less ideological flexibility in choosing his running mate than, say, Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio. Without media attention, and as he was being portrayed as virulently “anti-gay” in news accounts, Pence authorized a massive needle exchange program that controlled the disease’s spread.

Newt Gingrich is “actively lobbying” to be Donald Trump’s running mate, a source familiar with the process told CNN Saturday.

Adding Pence, 57, to the Republican ticket could add some message discipline to Trump’s whipsawing campaign.

Pence officials on Saturday again acknowledged last weekend’s meeting with Trump but referred additional questions about a VP selection to the Trump campaign.

While Pence may help Trump with those groups, others say he won’t do much to help win another important constituency – women.

The delay has some political observers confused, given the rapidity with which talk of a Trump-Pence team has escalated and the limited time frame state Republicans have to move on a substitute as their gubernatorial nominee.

Lankford, co-chairman of the more than 100-member Congressional Prayer Caucus, said in an interview, “I’m a big Mike Pence fan”.

If he does end up being Trump’s pick for VP, the governor has until Friday to withdraw from the IN ballot.

Mr. Pence, who is little known nationally but highly admired in conservative circles, also made a telling private call to Mr. Cardwell, according to a Republican close to both men.

Those names, along with retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal – another possibility – appeal to different possible targets for Trump in a general election, said IU political science professor Marjorie Hershey in an email.

“I particularly want to commend Donald Trump, who I think has given voice to the frustration of millions of working Americans with a lock of progress in Washington, D.C.”, Pence said, indicating that he wanted to remain in the business mogul’s good graces despite declining to endorse him.

Less than a week before the Republican National Convention, GOP presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump is coming to Indiana. It’s unclear if he was campaigning for governor or considering that higher office. The state chairman of Trump’s campaign, Rex Early, has said a 7:30 p.m. rally is also planned the same day. More than most recent presidential candidates, there’s a palpable sense that Trump could legitimately pick anyone to be his vice president. And on “Meet the Press” yesterday, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said, “Let’s all dial back the overheated political rhetoric”. Combined with the campaign’s lackadaisical efforts to keep surrogates on the same page and the decision being held exclusively by the quixotic candidate, it’s not surprising that we’ve seen plenty of rumors and speculation. Adding an IN appearance with Pence could just be a pro forma thing created to signal that Pence is IN the mix.
