Belgian investigators released three people on Friday after questioning them over an alleged plot to attack the capital on New Year’s Eve which forced the cancellation of the city’s annual fireworks display.

The mayor of Brussels, Yvan Mayeur, said on Wednesday night that a “significant” risk of a terrorist act targeting New Year’s Eve celebrations had caused the city to cancel its official festivities and fireworks display, Bloomberg reported.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday said that a magistrate will decide whether to issue arrest warrants against six people being questioned over the suspected plot following police searches in various parts of Brussels.
Mohammed K. faces similar charges. It said that the other three suspects had been set free on the same day of their arrest.
Said S. been charged with “playing a lead role in the activities of a terrorist group and recruiting for terrorist acts”, while Karay is facing charges of planning and “participating in the activities of a terrorist group”.
Mayeur said Wednesday that fireworks and related events in the central square of Place de Brouckere had been cancelled because it was not possible to “guarantee that we can check everyone coming to the event” in the current circumstances.
He made an initial court appearance on Thursday.
“The people of Paris and France need this symbolic passage into the New Year”, said Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo.
Little is known about the six new suspects, but their arrest only hours after a tenth terror suspect was charged with “terrorist murder”, reveals the willingness of Belgian authorities to get to the bottom of the investigation into the Paris terror attacks.
“We are not aware of any threat at this time that we deem credible”, he said, though reports of threats have surfaced.
In New York City, though, the party will go on, with an increased security detail that includes 6,000 police officers being deployed to Times Square, where one million revelers are expected.
The New Year’s Eve fireworks display and all official events were canceled in Belgium’s capital due to threats of an extremist attack.
