Still, on Tuesday, cops in Brussels announced the arrest of two men earlier this week suspected of plotting yet another attack, this one intended for New Year’s Eve.
The prosecutor’s office said no weapons or explosives were found in Wednesday’s search.
The government raised the threat level in Brussels to a “4” last month – an indication that an attack was “serious and imminent” – after the November 13 terrorist assaults in Paris that left 130 people dead.
Paris is replacing its traditional fireworks show with a video display on the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs Elyseés, which will see the biggest public gathering of people since the November attacks on the city, will be closed after 8pm.
“Unfortunately we have been forced to cancel the fireworks and all that was planned for tomorrow (Thursday) evening”, mayor Yvan Mayeur told Belgian broadcaster RTBF. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo told a French publication that France needs its symbolic passage into the new year, to “send a signal to the world” as it continues to recover from the attacks.
Belgian newspaper La Derniere Heure said that one of those arrested is a Salafist who founded the gang and that several of its members are supporters of the jihadist cause.
The Brussels clamp down goes further, with planned festivities in the centre, like live DJ sets, also cancelled.
Belgian authorities have arrested a number of people on suspicion of involvement in those attacks, which have been claimed by Islamic State.
Turkey has been on a high security alert since October, when two suicide bombers blew themselves up in a crowd of peace activists in Ankara, killing 103 people in the worst attack in the country’s modern history.
Two policewomen and eight soldiers are said to have engaged in group sex at a police station in the Brussels neighbourhood of Ganshoren while colleagues hunted for terror suspects.
