“It is a silver medal and I am back on the podium which is great”.

“It was just really hard days of competition”.

The high jump followed and it was Johnson-Thompson’s turn to make her mark setting a new British record of 1m 98 to move into the overall lead after two events. The timetable and sleeping didn’t help for everyone not just me. Not many people were getting PBs apart from Thiam and it showed because she won. Whilst speaking to the BBC last night, Ennis-Hill hinted that she may not compete in London next year and may take the decision to retire. “I don’t want to be that athlete who fizzles out. She will now be hoping her shot woes have not done the same.

Ennis-Hill had to settle for a best throw in the shot of 13.86m and admitted she was “devastated” with the effort after throwing around 14.50m in training. She was talking about her performance in Rio, but those words would also serve as an appropriate epitaph to a glorious career.

Ennis-Hill had needed to overturn a 10-second deficit in the concluding event, but was unable to break her 23-year-old rival despite claiming a commanding win.

In a thrilling two-day battle the lead has now changed hands four times, and the competitive experience of the 29-year-old Ennis-Hill may yet prove critical in the final session.

Meanwhile, Andy Murray will go for Olympic gold again after beating Kei Nishikori in the tennis semi-final. ‘I don’t want to be that athlete who fizzles out.

Campbell is the world record holder in the women’s 100m freestyle, but she was only able to finish sixth in this year’s final.

“This time it’s been completely different”.
