Belichick: ‘Disappointing’ Eagles didn’t give Kelly more time

Chip Kelly may be out of a job, but he has a supporter in Bill Belichick.

Kelly had early success with the Eagles and also won a front-office power struggle.

This was really a three-year evaluation of where we’re heading, what is the trajectory, what is the progress or lack thereof and what do I foresee for the future.

As soon as Kelly was sacked, there was talk that three National Football League teams had contacted him about each’s head coaching job, yet only one actually had a vacancy. He does a great job, he’s done a good job with that team. It feels good to have the Eagles back it felt like they were not the Eagles team I grew up loving! [Like] Josh [McDaniels] in Denver, there’s a lot of examples.

“I signed a four- or five-year deal and I think this is where I’ll be”, Murray said.

“Chip was great to me”.

“I’d say it’s really disappointing”, Belichick said.

Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins said that wasn’t necessarily the case, that Kelly had an open-door policy, but relied more on team leaders. “What they’ve done there, it’s never easy with coaching changes midseason”.

Hasselbeck said he knows Kelly “fairly well”, the result of both men coming from New England and Kelly recruiting Matt Hasselbeck’s younger brother, Tim, when Kelly was coaching at the University of New Hampshire. From ownership to the quarterback, things have gone unchanged since 2001.

The Eagles said offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, 50, the head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 2011-12, will be the interim coach for the regular-season finale Sunday against the New York Giants at the Meadowlands. Not many coaches who take over a new program do that. I’m not really a part of those programs.

“It was kind of weird to me because after one not-so-good year, he just goes”, Addison said. I was blessed to work with a gifted and hard-working coaching staff every day, and they will succeed wherever they go. “You have to change the culture….” Normally one coach is different from the previous coach. LeSean McCoy painted a picture of a coach not wanting his players to overshadow him. “You see how fast he got rid of all the good players”. It got him into some trouble last month when he ripped Eagles fans while talking with a reporter. A few months of practices aren’t enough, as far as Belichick is concerned. To the extent that we are able, we will try to keep you informed as we go through the process. Kelly was sacked Tuesday after the Eagles failed to meet lofty expectations in his third season as coach. To build that up over time, it doesn’t happen in training camp….
