Belichick on kick controversy: ‘Don’t really understand what the issue is’
Belichick mapped out his reasoning, citing games in New England’s past. This wasn’t a great game for a debut considering how stout the Jets are against the run.

Overtime rules dictate each team must possess the ball at least once.
Teddy Bridgewater turned in another sharp December performance, and Blair Walsh made five field goals for the Vikings.
While many football fans celebrated Belichick’s boo-boo after the Jets capitalized for a 26-20 win, consider this: Maybe it wasn’t a gaffe as much as it was pure genius.
This year, the Steelers were hoping to do themselves one better after falling to 6-5, hoping to close out the season with a five-game winning streak to match their 11-5 record of last season, though they would have required extra help to repeat as division champions. They were -4 in the turnover battle, and somehow only came away with a three-point loss.
Brandon Marshall was already rooting on the New York Jets’ defense when New England won the overtime coin toss. On the next drive Ryan Fitzpatrick had the ball knocked out of his hand right as he was about to come forward with his pass, causing a fumble. The long bright spot was Jabaal Sheard’s strip sack that was recovered by Jamie Collins and returned for a touchdown. The Jets were able to answer with a field goal making it 20-13. While the Patriots did incorporate some trick plays into this game I can’t imagine those plays are the depth of this coaching staff’s innovation for this season. Not when your opponent has shown that they have a 20 percent chance of reaching the end zone against you.
The officials meet New York Jets’ Darrelle Revis (24), teammate Calvin Pryor (25) and New England Patriots’ Matthew Slater (18) and teammate Rob Ninkovich (50) for the coin toss before the overtime period of an NFL football gam… The Jets capitalized on their decision and went 80 yards in five plays, sealing the deal with a six-yard touchdown reception by Eric Decker to win the game. So to maximize its odds of winning, the original kicking team must capitalize on the brief window of opportunity it has at the end of overtime’s first exchange of possessions.
On celebrating with the fans after the game-winning touchdown…”It’s a lovely thing”.
JETS NOTES: Former Jet Mo Lewis was the “Pilot” of the game.
Quincy Enunwa dropped a throw that could have sealed the game in regulation.
Earlier in the week, Brandon Marshall was selected to play in his sixth Pro Bowl Game. He had seen his fourth-quarter defense hold the Jets to a pair of three-and-outs and then another punt after New England tied the game with less than two minutes remaining. On his lone carry, reserve RB Joey Iosefa was stuffed for no gain by ILB Demario Davis on third-and-1 from the New England 39 in the first quarter. The Jets are now in control of their own destiny and can punch their ticket to the playoffs with a win next week against the Bills. The Patriots have lost so many pieces this season but I can’t imagine the team going that deep into the playoffs without a true tackle on the offensive line. “It’s a tough game”. Heading into Kansas City to take on a lowly 1-5 team bereft of its start running back, Pittsburgh was knocked off then, and the Chiefs have not lost since.

Sure it was rather risky to allow the Jets to start off overtime with the ball, but it only backfired because the Jets did what many of their predecessors failed to do in similar situations against the hated Patriots. Beat the Bills next Sunday, and they’re in the playoffs.
