Bell State coach Pete Lembo to join Maryland staff
Ball State coach Pete Lembo is stepping down to take a job on D.J. Durkin’s staff at Maryland, according to Fox Sports.

The Pete Lembo era in Muncie is reportedly over. Earlier this month Durkin hired former Virginia coach Mike London as associate head coach and former Syracuse coach Scott Shafer as defensive coordinator. His overall record as a head coach during those three stops is 112-65. Lembo stayed at Ball State, but injuries, combined with a lack of depth, resulted in two disappointing seasons in 2014 and 2015, with the Cardinals going 8-16 (6-10) in that span.
“I have really enjoyed getting to know Coach Durkin recently and couldn’t pass on this great opportunity to be on his staff”, said Lembo. Lembo made $517,750 this past season, according USA Today’s salary database. Dan Enos left Central Michigan past year to become the offensive coordinator at Arkansas.
Maryland went 3-9 this year and 1-7 in the Big Ten, the program’s second year in the league after spending 61 years in the ACC. It was Ball State’s worst record during his tenure.
Ball State is slated to return six starters on offense and nine on defense for the 2016 season, including freshman quarterback Riley Neal and first team All-MAC honorees Joshua Posley (defensive lineman) and Sean Wiggins (linebacker).

“We have an outstanding group of student-athletes returning and the foundation for success is in place”, Ball State Director of Athletics Mark Sandy said. He previously served as head coach for five seasons apiece at Lehigh (2001-05) and Elon (2006-10) of the lower-tier Football Championship Subdivision.
