Veteran filmmaker Garry Marshall, the man behind some of the best Hollywood romantic comedies like “Pretty Woman”, “Runaway Bride” and “Valentine’s Day“, has died at the age of 81. According to Entertainment Weekly, Marshall passed away Tuesday night in a Burbank, CA, hospital from complications of pneumonia following a stroke. His first big TV hit was The Odd Couple, and he went from strength to strength, creating iconic 1970s sitcom Happy Days and introducing Robin Williams to the world through Mork and Mindy.

Hudson was lucky enough to work with the famous director on the comedic drama, which featured an A-list cast, alongside stars Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston, and took to Instagram on Wednesday to share some of her fondest memories with Garry. Of course, the latter birthed a fan favorite in Henry Winkler’s the Fonz, and for a brief time during its peak, Happy Days become the #1 comedy series in the country. “He was thoughtful and sweet and so amusing you would pee yourself a little”, Hathaway wrote with a black and white photo of Marshall and her Princess Diaries co-star. “Thank you for capturing so much joy on film, over and over”.

Richard Gere, who starred in “Pretty Woman” along with Julia Roberts, praised Marshall as “one of those truly important people one is blessed to meet in one’s lifetime”. Thank you for taking a chance on me. In one flash of a moment there was so much recognition of how loyal, wonderful, kind, generous, amusing and profound Garry was. Rest in peace Garry Marshall. We lost a lovely man & masterful story teller.

“I’m discovered in this movie”.

He began his entertainment career in the 1960s selling jokes to comedians, then moved to writing sketches for “The Tonight Show” with Jack Paar in NY.

“He was the kindest man you’d ever had met”, Braff wrote.
