Seth Rogen’s foul-mouthed food animated comedy “Sausage Party” continued to do well for Sony Pictures.

“Kubo and the Two Strings” landed in fourth place on its first weekend out, pulling in $12.6 million.

“War Dogs”, a new release with Jonah Hill and Miles Teller, opened in third place with $14.3 million in ticket sales its first weekend out.

Earlier this week, all three new wide releases were expected to earn very similar three-day grosses of around $12 million. The $60 million film also earned a rare A grade on CinemaScore, indicating the film could travel atop long legs toward a domestic finish in the $50-$60 million range.

The $100 million epic with Jack Huston as the chariot racing Jewish nobleman Judah Ben-Hur “derailed spectacularly” because it was apparently unable to get beyond its core Christian audience, Variety said.

The Oscar-winning 1959 film starring Charlton Heston may be regarded as a cinema classic, but the Paramount and MGM “Ben-Hur” update released this weekend pulled in about $4 million in the USA and Canada on Friday, according to estimates. “Ben-Hur”, meanwhile, bombed on its debut. The film added another 2.1 million dollars internationally this weekend, standing at 71.3 million dollars worldwide. On the specialty front, Natalie Portman’s feature directorial debut, A Tale of Love and Darkness, averages $18,000 per theater for the week’s highest location average, while Kingslave: Final Fantasy: XV earns a modest $114,000 from 24 theaters across its opening weekend.
