‘Ben-Hur’ left in the dust at American box office

In second, Sausage Party remained a large draw for the R rated crowd with an estimated $15.3 million weekend and $65.3 million in domestic total, an excellent take so far for a film that only cost $19 million to make, and with the opportunity to make even more. It’s a shame though, because I caught the film over the weekend and actually enjoyed it quite a bit. The movie was co-produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, who have enormous cachet with religious audiences skeptical of Hollywood treatments of Biblical stories. Although Paramount got help from MGM, which put up 80 percent of the financing, the studio is still going to take a massive loss on this one. But it’s the latest in a string of under-performers for Paramount, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows and Zoolander 2. It’s expected that Paramount could lose as much as $350 million this year.

“Suicide Squad” is holding the No. 1 spot hostage for the third week in a row, bringing in an estimated million. The comic book based movie has the highest grossing opening for the month of August and has surpassed its $175 million budget. Including this past weekend, the total (domestic/ international) box office earnings for Suicide Squad is over $500 million. Can any of them topple Suicide Squad?

Trailing at number two for a second week was “Sausage Party”, the raunchy animated comedy with Seth Rogan as the leading voice. And some, naturally, did better than others. But you’d be wrong.

Based on a true story, War Dogs took in a nice $14.3M in its opening weekend to land in third place.

But how did the rest of the Top 10 do at the weekend box office? After three weeks in theaters, the film is well past a half billion worldwide, with more than half of that money coming from overseas. Sound off in the comments!
