Bengal rains intensify: Death toll 47

The chief minister took stock of the situation in Howrah’s Udaynarayanpur during the day and asserted her government would aid in relief of the affected people with its own resources as she was not expecting much help from the central government.

The rains triggered flood-like situation, affecting 12 districts, damaging almost two lakh houses and rendering over a lakh people homeless.

Crops in over 2.1 lakh hectares of land were destroyed across the state, she said. 7 relief camps have been opened and 55 peoples have been accommodated.

At least 81 people lost their lives and more than 80 lakh people were affected in fresh floods due to excessive rains in worst affected Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Odisha.

Buildings with weak structures collapsed in many places, including in Kolkata, following overnight downpour.

An elderly man was crushed to death after a portion of his house collapsed in Kolkata. Burdwan, Murshidabad, West Midnapore, and Howrah were among the districts affected. “My ministers have to visit different districts to oversee the relief operations”, the chief minister added. Relief materials have been distributed to the affected population.

A total of 17 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed for rescue and relief operations in Gujarat.

Various rivers breached their embankments and inundated several areas on Sunday. “There is no waterlogging in most of the areas, but certain areas are so low-lying that it could not be cleared until Sunday evening”, said Tarak Singh, Mayor in-Council (drainage) member. Many villages in Ukhrul district have also been cut off from the rest of the state.

The nagging rains are due to a deep depression over Bay of Bengal caused by Komen.

Cyclone Komen, which unleashed deadly rains in Southeast Asia earlier in the week, centered over the border of Bangladesh and India Saturday, further soaking the area suffering from mudslides and flooding.
