That is problematic for the Bengals after a 20-17 overtime loss to the Broncos on Monday night left them needing a win and some help if they are to get a first round bye and avoid Wild Card game. And when one of the best defensive players is tacitly feuding with the team’s quarterback with his wife as the conduit, what player wouldn’t say to himself at the end of a five-win season, “What the hell are we doing here?”
“There’s an old saying: ‘It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish, ‘ ” Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler said.
The Broncos (11-4) overcame a 14-0 first-half deficit and clinched a fifth consecutive playoff berth, while Cincinnati (11-4) blew a chance to earn a bye in the playoffs.
Running back C.J. If the Miami Dolphins also beat the New England Patriots, the Broncos would claim the AFC’s top seed and home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
“We wanted to put ourselves in the playoffs, and we still control things we want to control moving on to San Diego, moving on to the future and how we want to be seeded within these playoffs”, Anderson said.
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback AJ McCarron (5) throws against the Denver Broncos during the second half of an NFL football game, Monday, Dec. 28, 2015, in Denver. Ware recovered the fumble, ending the overtime possession for the Bengals (11-4), who also are playoff-bound.
The first-year quarterback said after the game that he injured the wrist on his non-throwing left hand while going for the fumble on the game’s final play, and is scheduled to have an MRI on Tuesday. I told (center) Russ (Bodine) I looked up to see the coverage and the snap caught me by surprise.
But more importantly, for a team already without starting quarterback Andy Dalton, the Bengals may have just lost backup quarterback AJ McCarron.
The game was sent to overtime when Broncos kicker Brandon McManus badly shanked a potential game-winning field goal.
Starter-in-waiting Osweiler finished 27-of-39 for 299 yards with one touchdown pass and no interceptions in front of a crowd of 76,000 at Sports Authority Field. “It was a hard-fought game”. Or, alternately, a Houston loss, an Indianapolis win and wins or ties by both Kansas City and Baltimore, provided both teams don’t tie.
Trailing by 11, the Broncos took to the air to begin the third quarter, marching 81 yards on the strength of Osweiler’s superb passing.
It was Denver’s first second-half score in four games and it would not be the team’s last, though the Broncos turned to their running game.
The Denver Broncos played their third coldest home game in franchise history Monday night.
Key Play: Anderson’s 39-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that gave the Broncos their first lead came courtesy of three missed tackles, the first of which came in the backfield. He avoided traffic. He dodged defensive tackle Wallace Gilberry, outran safety Reggie Nelson, veered past Adam Jones and stepped through linebacker Rey Maualuga’s ankle tackle.
However, the Broncos’ defense again forced a punt.
All the while, McCarron and Co. went vanilla and put the defense on the field more than it had been in the first half.
You know what happened from there, Osweiler moved Denver to the 19 where McManus kicked a 37-yard field goal.
Denver didn’t get on the scoreboard until McManus kicked a 23-yard field goal with 18 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
Carlos Dunlap is now the Bengals’ all-time sack leader.
Complacency kills teams like the Cincinnati Bengals.
The miss was one of two for Nugent in the past three games.
