Bengals cut veteran wide receiver Brandon Tate

The Bengals also placed defensive tackle Brandon Thompson on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list. In five seasons, he caught 57 passes for 901 yards and six touchdowns.

Special teams coach Darrin Simmons said after the walkthrough there is hope that Peerman can return at some point during the season. “It’s always tough anytime you waive a player, especially with somebody like Brandon, somebody you have a great deal of trust in”.

An eighth-year National Football League player in 2016, Tate has played in every Bengals regular-season and postseason game since joining the team as a free agent in 2011. The Bengals released him on Tuesday rather than waiting for the final cut over the weekend, giving Tate a better chance to catch on with another team.

He leaves as the franchise’s career leader in punt returns (149) and punt-return yardage (1,411) and ranks second in kick-return yardage (3,517).

Tate became expendable with the emergence of undrafted rookie Alex Erickson, who leads the Bengals with three preseason touchdowns (including a punt return touchdown in the preseason opener). “That’s one of the harder decisions we’ve had to make for a good person, good man, great family”. He is still rehabbing the torn ACL he suffered in last year’s season finale.

In addition to cutting Tate, the Bengals placed rookie defensive tackle Andrew Billings on injured reserve. He suffered an ankle injury in the first preseason game.
