Bengals upset on Monday night, drop first game of the season

Offense and special teams simply didn’t surface.

While the defense did begin breaking down in the fourth quarter, they held the Texans to just three points through three quarters while the offense was doing close to nothing. But he came back to bite them at the worst possible moment. Tight end Tyler Eifert had three key drops, and quarterback Andy Dalton struggled to find his rhythm against relentless Texans pressure. The biggest thing for this city is we’ve done a lot good things. “Maybe it will recharge us”. In the second half, they simply never got started.

Yates beat the Bengals twice as a rookie in the 2011 season, including a first-round playoff win that was the Texans’ first victory in the postseason. That experience helped Yates get through his impromptu performance Monday.

Hopkins’ incredible take was the culmination of an expertly marshalled drive by stand-in Yates, who marched the Texans 79 yards up-field before his 22-yard floated pass to Hopkins which settled the match. Yates was something else.

Hoyer was escorted to the locker room with the Texans trailing 6-3 late in the third quarter. Yates hit DeAndre Hopkins for the only touchdown of the game on a spectacular catch on the sideline in the end zone and hung airborne for a long time but managed to catch the ball and get both feet in bounds for the score.

The Houston Texans gave the Cincinnati Bengals their first loss of the season Monday night in an ugly 10-6 affair.

Dalton had another rough night under the prime-time lights, going 22 of 38 for 197 yards and an interception. Cincinnati’s final chance slipped away when A.J. Green for what would have been a first down at the Texans 23-yard line with 40 seconds left, but safety Quintin Demps stripped him of the ball and recovered the fumble.

It’s tough to lose. “Not everything is going to be pretty”. “He is a great player, and they are a great team, but our coaches put together a great game plan, we executed the game plan, everybody did their job”. Two weeks earlier, they were in a similar predicament in Pittsburgh and Dalton threw a touchdown pass to Green for a 16-10 win. At one point in the first half, quarterback Brian Hoyer was the team’s leading rusher. He gained only 15 yards on seven carries Monday night.
