Ravi Shastri was among the other applicants for the role of head coach, after his contract as team director ended following this year’s World Twenty20.

Among the 57 people who had applied also included big names such as Sandeep Patil, Tom Moody, Lalchand Rajput and Venkatesh Prasad.

He replaces Duncan Fletcher as the Zimbabwean finished his term following the 2015 ICC World Cup in Australia, where India lost to Australia in the semi-final.

This was announced by BCCI president Anurag Thakur fter the Board’s working committee meeting held in Dharamsala.

Former India captain Anil Kumble named as the national team’s new head coach.

“It was also a good learning experience for me as the panel wanted to know exactly how I would achieve the objective of [helping] India become the No. 1 team in all forms”, Amre said.

In his illustrious career, which spanned across 18 years, Kumble has represented India in 132 Tests and 271 ODIs.

“There was no such limitation that we have to look for only Indian coach”, Thakur said. They have gone through the process, interviewed and recommended a few names.

“It’s not about Indian or foreign coach”, Thakur said.

“Jumbo” Kumble’s first assignment will be the tour of the Caribbean where India play 4 Tests from next month (July) against the West Indies.

“Need to sit down with Sourav, Sachin, Laxman and Dravid and need to do what is best for Indian cricket”. He has been a match-winner for India, he has a great record.

Spin great Kumble incidentally do not meet all the criteria – of not coaching any global or first-class team, nor has he passed any course from the National Cricket Academy.

BCCI Secretary Ajay Shirke said the decision to keep Kumble’s tenure at one year for the time being has been taken to ensure professionalism. Coaching the Indian team is no joke.
