Bengaluru Shame: Girl stripped off, paraded naked; police among onlookers

The 21-year-old Tanzanian doing her BBM course was dragged out of the vehicle in which she was seated along with her three friends after it was stopped by the mob shortly after they reached the accident spot on Sunday night, according to All African Students Union in Bengaluru. Reacting to the incident, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said, “We are deeply pained over the shameful incident” and that she has spoken to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and requested him to ensure stringent punishment to the guilty.

The mob reportedly thrashed her and tore off her clothes when she protested and pleaded them to leave her alone.

The girl, who is a second year BBA student of Acharya College, is also reported to have tried to board a bus to escape the mob’s wrath, but the passengers threw her back. “He informed me that a criminal case has been registered and four accused have been arrested”, Swaraj tweeted.

The Tanzanian Embassy requested the government to ensure safety and security of all African students in India.

In what is being described as a case of mistaken identity, media reports suggest that the Tanzanian was passing a location in the city’s Hesaraghatta area on Sunday night where a 35-year-old woman had died after being mowed down by a vehicle being driven by a Sudanese student.

African students in Bengaluru said they have been cowering in their flats ever since the incident.

However, Bengaluru Police have ruled out that it was a racial attack.

Speaking about the incident, Bosco Kaweesi, Legal Adviser, All African Students Union in Bengaluru, was quoted as saying, “She’s Tanzanian, the man who caused the accident comes from Sudan, they didn’t even know each other”. The woman’s statement has been recorded, he added.

“We have taken up the case very seriously”. The driver of the auto which mowed down the woman is in police custody. We have added suitable sections of the Indian Penal Code to the FIR that was registered earlier based on the complaint that her auto was set afire.
