Benidorm star Tim Healy taken ill

The 64-year-old plays crossdressing Lesley in the comedy series and was “fighting for his life”.

Tim – who is known for playing cross-dresser Lesley in the comedy – spent four weeks in a hospital in Spain under the watchful eye of doctors because he seemed to be at death’s door, but his condition made a dramatic improvement over the weekend and he was deemed stable enough to be airlifted back to the United Kingdom to continue his treatment here.

The 64-year-old has been in hospital for almost a month after falling ill while filming.

Tim – who is engaged to Jo Anderton – had spent four weeks in hospital in Spain after he was taken ill while filming, but he made dramatic improvement last weekend and was able to be airlifted back to the United Kingdom in order to continue his treatment.

Welch is said to have flown to visit her former husband in Spain during his illness, while his new wife Joan was at his side.

‘Filming schedules have been adjusted to accommodate Tim’s absence on screen.

Tim’s latest health drama is not his first.

Tim, who was born in Newcastle and found fame in the 1980s’ show Auf Wiedersehen Pet, has played the cross-dressing character Les/Lesley in Benidorm since 2010.

Healy underwent an operation in 2011 to unblock arteries in both his legs after being diagnosed with a condition known as intermittent claudication.

Many stars and Healy fans have taken to Twitter to express their concern and wish for his speedy recovery, with Superstar contestant Jon Moses writing: “Get well soon Tim Healy xxx love your work fellow North East lad” and West End Billy Elliot star Scott Garnham posting: “Well this is very sad”.

Tim’s other friends from the entertainment world are also wishing him all the best as he recovers.

Tim and Denise, who have two sons together, divorced back in 2012.
