Benintendi gets 2 hits but Red Sox lose to Mariners 3-1
The teams we’re vying for that playoff spot with are playing really well right now so hopefully we’ll get in a situation where we’re not having to win games like this to salvage ties in series. Lose and it’s settling for another split and regretting more missed opportunities.

After a Travis Shaw single and a Sandy Leon sacrifice bunt to start the 11th inning, Holt came through in the clutch, delivering an RBI single that plated the eventual winning run in Boston’s 3-2 win.
Drew Storen relieved Iwakuma in the top of the eighth inning and proceeded to look as uninspiring as a Guy Fieri creation made only using leftovers. But he would never score, as Seth Smith struck out against sidearmer Brad Ziegler to end the game.
Seattle improved to 54-52 on the season. The Cubs scored three runs in the inning to sweep the three-game series.
The Mariners coaching staff didn’t exactly have a book on Ariel Miranda and what he was all about coming into his first start.
Benintendi, making his first career start, recorded the first two major league hits.
Miranda showed a fastball that touched 95 miles per hour and sat around 92-94 miles per hour with decent off-speed stuff. The National League All-Star has struggled in his return to the AL and has allowed 18 hits – including four homers – and six walks in just 14 1/3 innings. It’s an outing that the Mariners would gladly take considering the circumstances.
Orioles 3, Rangers 2: Kevin Gausman outpitched Cole Hamels, and Baltimore rode a three-run first inning to a victory over Texas. The last player the Red Sox called up directly from double-A was all-star Jackie Bradley Jr.
The crowd of 33,369 gave Miranda a nice ovation for working out of the jam.
After striking out Robinson Cano swinging on an inside pitch that made the All-Star second baseman twirl around in a full circle before walking to the dugout, Porcello served up a bomb to Nelson Cruz on a sinker that caught too much of the plate. Miranda fell behind 2-0 and grooved a 92 miles per hour fastball that Shaw was ready to hammer.
In Cincinnati, Brandon Moss singled home two runs in St. Louis’ four-run first, extending his season-long streak against the Reds.
Boston picked up its second run of the game in the fifth on back-to-back doubles from Bryce Bentz and Betts to make it 2-0. Benintendi was stranded when Xander Bogaerts fouled out to end the inning.
Hanley Ramirez avoided a significant injury and sustained only a sprained left wrist after slipping and falling on his way into the Red Sox clubhouse after Tuesday night’s loss to the Mariners.
In Atlanta, Ender Inciarte broke a tie with an RBI single in the fifth inning and the offensively challenged Braves had 15 hits against Pittsburgh. Zunino’s homered 427 feet to center field on a night swirling wind appeared to be knocking down fly balls to that part of the outfield.
Guillermo Heredia hit a bunt single and two outs later, Pomeranz was faced with a shot at Cruz. He later lined a broken-bat single to right to complete a 2-for-3 night. “And has barely started work at third after spending the season at second as the Red Sox worked to get him a solid base at one position before shifting him elsewhere”.
Porcello struck out eight and walked one.
