Crews responded to reports of the blaze at the Mandarin Garden restaurant at 2025 Shattuck Avenue, near University Avenue, about 5:15 a.m., fire officials said.
Dozens of firefighters on the ground and from aerial ladders and adjacent rooftops battled the flames which were contained by 8:30 a.m. The fire was not declared under control as firefighters continued to look for hot spots.
A family that lives in the same building housing the restaurant had evacuated the structure during the first fire and remained outside when the second blaze occurred, she said.
There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire. The northbound lanes of Shattuck Ave.in the area were expected to be closed for several hours.
The apartment buildings didn’t sustain damage from the fire, but firefighters had to force entyr into a commercial space near the restaurant to check for any fire extension, she said. It was still being investigated if the two fires are connected. Firefighters say there were no injured, but the restaurant is a total loss.
On Tuesday Nov. 23, BFD also responded to what turned out to be an oven fire at a residential building on College and Dwight.
Smoke pouring from the site of the fire could be seen from a block away.
