Still, in a chaotic election year that has seen outsiders tap voter unease, Clinton will not be taking anything for granted, not least Sanders.

Sanders clarified his remarks on Monday, telling reporters in Detroit that “when you talk about ghettos, traditionally what you’re talking about is African-American communities”.

“Sometimes you don’t get ideal choices in life or politics, and so I voted to get that money flowing to save those auto jobs to restructure the auto industry, and if everybody had voted the way he did, we would have lost millions of jobs”, she said.

The debate took place as Mr Sanders beat Ms Clinton in the ME caucuses to bounce back into the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, while Florida Senator Marco Rubio won the Republican primary in Puerto Rico, defeating Mr Trump.

Mrs. Clinton draws support from 53% of voters who said they would participate in a Democratic primary, while Mr. Sanders has 44%, the poll finds. “Sanders and I differ on”, Clinton said.

Sanders countered that the money for the auto industry was part of a larger bailout package for Wall Street, adding, “I will be damned if it was the working people of this country who have to bail out the crooks on Wall Street”.

Clinton immediately cut Sanders off and started to reply, “You know…” Trump may also have a home-field advantage in NY – the same poll shows the businessman leading with 45 percent in the state.

However, Sanders also voted to block the release of $350 billion from the Wall Street bailout in January 2009.

The pro-abortion web site suggests Hilary Clinton is the more vocally pro-abortion of the two, saying that she has pressed more fervently for overturning legal protections stopping taxpayer funding of abortions.

“I certainly consider him an ally”, Clinton said.

Voters in four states will head to the polls for primaries today.

During the beginning of the seventh Democratic debate Monday in Flint, Clinton for the first time called for the governor to resign or be recalled when Sanders renewed his assertion that Snyder should step down. “We had to have that pass and so she’s absolutely right and she was there with us every step of the way”, said Stabenow, a Clinton ally.
