The Economist also ranked the five least livable cities of 2015, which included No. 136 Tripoli, Libya; No. 137 Lagos, Nigeria; No. 138 Port Moresby, New Guinea, No. 139 Dhaka Bangladesh; and No. 140 Damascus, Syria.
This year Melbourne has been ranked the most liveable city in the world for the fifth time in a row while Vienna city of Austria gained second position in the ranking.
Hong Kong has seen a decline of 3.2 per cent in its liveability score over the last 12 months as a result of heightened fears of unrest, the EIU’s global liveability ranking report said. The blame falls primarily on the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine, terrorism in France and Tunisia, and civil unrest in America, to name but a few factors.
A period of relative stability is the main reason why seven of the eight mainland cities that were rated have seen scores improve in the past 12 months.
Monocle conducted another most livable city survey in June and ranked Tokyo, Japan, as No. 1, according to The Huffington Post.
This was mainly due to the aftermath of last year’s pro-democracy protests, according to a survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
The ranking considers 30 factors related to things like safety, healthcare, educational resources, infrastructure and environment in 140 cities around the world.
“The city retains bragging rights over its regional competitor Singapore, but by a tiny margin”.
In the Monocle survey, Sydney, Australia, was listed No. 5, followed by Stockholm, Sweden; Vancouver; Helsinki, Finland; Munich, Germany; with Zurich, Switzerland, and Copenhagen, Denmark, tied for 10th place, The Post noted.

Meanwhile Calgary in Canada and Adelaide in Australia shared joint fifth place. Many famous acts have come out of the city’s music scene, including Temper Trap, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Jet, and others.
