Best joke at Golden Globes? Mel Gibson’s colonoscopy stab at Ricky Gervais

Epic survival thriller The Revenant and space blockbuster The Martian won big at the Golden Globes on Sunday, boosting their chances for Oscars glory in February. She thanked all of the important people, including co-star Michael Fassbender, who she described as “a legend”.

Best dramatic actress prize went to Taraji P. Henson for her role as Cookie on “Empire”.

The presumptive victor still seemed truly shocked by the award, and gave a gracious speech, thanking Emma Donoghue who wrote Room and adapted it to film, as well as director Lenny Abrahamson. Once Gibson was onstage, the two men hugged.

Rolling Stone and plenty of social media users rushed to Gervais’s defense, calling the comic actor’s humor “hilarious” and telling trans folks to lighten up. Critics darlings “Carol” and “Mad Max: Fury Road” were surprisingly shut out as well. Denzel Washington classes up the joint: Adding a refreshing note of warmth and class, Washington accepted his Cecil B. DeMille achievement award by bringing up his family, and conferring with his wife about his misplaced speech and glasses.
