Best of British heading for Oscars

Coming soon: “Oscars: The Sequel”.

“The Revenant”, a harrowing survival thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a 19th century fur trapper, topped the Oscars nominations list Thursday with 12 nods, including for best picture, actor and director.

But absences were also stuck on repeat.

Room has done exceptionally well in terms of nominations but the big question we must ask – where is Jacob Tremblay’s nod for Best Supporting Actor? Chris Rock, the Oscar host in 2005, will host the event for the second time this year.

This morning brought the always debatable Academy Award nominations for the year in film that was 2015.

“Champagne and mezcal will run tonight!” said Inarritu in a statement from London.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” scored a best director nomination for Australian filmmaker George Miller.

– Composer John Williams’ original score for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was nominated for this year’s awards. Christian Bale (“The Big Short”) follows at 3-1, followed by Mark Ruffalo (“Spotlight”) at 6-1, Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies”) 8-1, and Tom Hardy (“The Revenant”), also at 8-1. And Oscar voters loved its acting (nominations for Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara) and its adapted screenplay (ditto for Phyllis Nagy), among other elements. A Best Supporting Actor nom for the British talent was definitely a topic of discussion since the film’s release.

“What is important is that this entire conversation of diversity is here and that we are talking about it”, said Isaacs. We were going out into the middle of the wilderness in sub-zero temperatures.

As every year, there were some notable snubs – and surprises. Matt Damon, Michael Fassbender, Eddie Redmayne and Bryan Cranston rounded out the non-diverse Best Actor category, according to the Associated Press. “Black Mass” was supposed to be Johnny Depp’s big comeback.

The 46-year-old actress is up against first-time nominees Brie Larson [Room] and Charlotte Rampling [45 Years], as well as Saoirse Ronan [Brooklyn] and Jennifer Lawrence [Joy]. Scott had been nominated this week by the Directors Guild of America for best feature director.

Spotlight actress Rachel McAdams and Jennifer Jason Leigh also landed nominations in the category.

“It was thrilling. We were screaming like idiots in the pitch black with the smell of waffles in the room”, McKay said. The film, which was one of the summer’s biggest box office hits, only earned one nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

“Mad Max: Fury Road”: Played in Visalia and now available on home video. There is also a lot of female representation in the writing categories, with Meg LeFauve (Inside Out), Emma Donoghue (Room), and Phyllis Nagy (Carol) all picking up nominations for their screenplays. A Best Picture upset by Mad Max over favorites The Revenant and Spotlight would be truly shocking, but once again it looks like the genre will have to settle for a seat or two at the table – just not at the head.
