“Spotlight”, which has dominated critics’ lists, received nominations for best picture, best director (Tom McCarthy), best supporting actor (Mark Ruffalo), best supporting actress (Rachel McAdams) and editing.
Now, 39 years later, Stallone is once again being recognized for his portrayal of Balboa, this time with a nomination for best supporting actor in “Creed”.
Mad Max: Fury Road went on to receive 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Motion Picture of the Year, Directing, Production Design, Editing, Costume Design, Visual Effects, and more.
“The Revenant” – a film based on a novel of the same name by Michael Punke and inspired by the experiences of frontiersman and fur trapper Hugh Glass – leads the way with 12 Academy Award nominations.
The nominees for best adapted screenplay are Charles Randolph and Adam McKay, “The Big Short”; Nick Hornby, “Brooklyn”; Phyllis Nagy, “Carol”; Drew Goddard, “The Martian”; Emma Donoghue, “Room”; Matt Charman and Ethan Coen & Joel Coen, “Bridge of Spies”.
“You have given our film the strongest of spotlights on a subject matter so crucial for many women across the world today”.
The 88th Academy Awards will be held February 28 in Hollywood, carried live on Walt Disney Co.’s ABC network and broadcast in more than 225 countries. “I was not expecting it … especially at this time in my life”. The star’s turn in Beasts of No Nation has been widely hailed as exceptional, but the feature failed to garner a single nomination.
The snub comes two months after Isaacs-the Academy’s first African American president-announced the creation of a five-year plan aimed at boosting diversity among Academy voters, who decide the Oscar nominations.
Putting the issue in even sharper relief, two films with black directors and largely black casts-“Compton” and the “Rocky” spinoff “Creed”-landed nominations only for Caucasians who worked on the movies: Supporting actor Sylvester Stallone for “Creed” and the pair of screenwriters behind “Compton”.
The nominees announced Thursday morning are: Colombia’s “Embrace of the Serpent”, France’s “Mustang”, Hungary’s “Son of Saul”, Jordan’s “Theeb” and Denmark’s “A War”. Jordan and Columbia celebrated their first nominations.
Aside from a nomination for composer John Williams (his 45th for scoring, and 50th overall), “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” did not break through the technical achievements wall.
Pack leader The Revenant prompted plenty of jokes. Netflix’s documentaries “What Happened, Miss Simone” and “Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight For Freedom” were nominated. The other nominees were “Amy”, “Cartel Land” and “The Look of Silence”.

That wasn’t the case three days prior, when Page Six ran the headline: “George Miller Will Never Make Another “Mad Max” Movie” alongside quotes that made him sound like he had just completed a marathon and someone tried offering him new running shoes.
