Just when you thought you had caught up with all of the Beyonce news, another bombshell dropped.

The day before Beyoncé takes the stage during the Coldplay-headlined Super Bowl 50 halftime show, the singer dropped her surprise new single “Formation”, her first new song since her Beyoncé: Platinum Edition was released in November 2014. Much of it is filmed in New Orleans, and makes several visual references to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

One scene cuts between the dancing boy and the band of cops, to a graffiti’d wall with the words “STOP SHOOTING US” on it.

The Super Bowl half-time show has plenty of eyes and ears on it given that it’s a no-joke, pop-heavy affair.

Set to a bouncy beat, Beyonce largely sets aside her sweeping vocal range for a hip-hop delivery as she declares herself true to her roots and boasts of her extraordinary success. Oh, and there’s a glorious cameo from Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy, who’s rocking her natural hair.

“Earned all this money but they never take the country out of me/I got hot sauce in my bag, swag”, says Beyonce, who was born in Texas to parents from Alabama and Louisiana. The song is now available for download via Tidal, co-owned by Beyonce and her husband Jay-Z.
