Baartman was sold into slavery in the 1800s and made to perform against her will under the name Hottentot Venus.
A source previously told The Sun that Beyonce is “desperate to be taken seriously as an actress” and hoped the film would get her some kudos. She died at the age of 26, but was not properly buried in her native country until 2002.

Burgess asks why does Beyonce have to choose Baartman to be the subject of her film and not just a simple indigenous American woman? “This is an important story that should be told, however”.
Beyoncé hasn’t publicly commented over Burgess’s outright dismissal of her controversial decision to play Baartman.
