Beyoncé surprised Chance the Rapper backstage the VMAs

Chance The Rapper may have lost the award for Best Hip-Hop Video at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards’ (the power of “Hotline Bling”…), but thanks to an unexpected rendezvous with pal Beyonce, he definitely won out otherwise.

In a bold statement against police shootings, Bey brought the mothers of Mike Brown, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and Oscar Grant to the event. All four men were murdered, with Brown, Garner and Grant fatally shot by police. Martin was shot and killed by wannabe cop, George Zimmerman. Earlier, the mothers appeared in Beyonce’s visual album “Lemonade”, holding up photos of their sons.

For many, the chance to attend the VMAs represents an official arrival to one of music’s largest stages, but for Chance to receive personal acknowledgements from both Kanye and Beyonce it signals something far greater, that he is in rarefied company, even if he’s still believing it himself. Queen Bey now has a reigning total of 25 Moonmen, while Madonna, the previous queen of the VMAs, has 20.

The star also took home best female video for “Hold Up” and swept the technical nominations with “Formation”.
