Biden visits cancer research center in Australia

Mr Biden praised links between United States and Australian troops.

Vice President Joe Biden has told Australians not to worry about the divisive USA election because the “better angels in America will prevail”.

Researcher Sherene Loi demonstrated research during Mr Biden’s visit, highlighting cells in the body that attempt to attack the disease.

Mr Biden congratulated Mr Turnbull on his recent election victory. During his three days in Australia, Biden addressed business leaders and spoke at Boeing’s Australian headquarters to underscore Australia’s considerable dependence on USA investment.

Biden is visiting Australia on a four day trip which includes visits to Melbourne and Sydney.

He also noted that while Australia and the USA had benefited from the “spirit and energy” of “courageous” immigrants, both nations grappled with legacies of racism and exclusion.

“We bolstered our special operation forces, enhanced our cyberspace capability, invested in game changing technologies in order to maintain our qualitative edge for years to come”.

Biden did not explicitly reference the South China Sea dispute, but raised his hopes to strengthen alliances and increase co-operation with Asian nations including the Philippines, Japan and Korea, as well as mentioning that he had discussed American involvement in the Pacific with Chinese president Xi Jinping, making it clear that “we are a Pacific nation”.

Biden’s visit comes five years after President Barack Obama announced that U.S. Marines would begin rotating through the Australian city of Darwin as part of the U.S. military pivot to Asia.

Later, Biden met with war veterans and then attended an Australian rules football match with his granddaughters.

“It is no longer what America can do for New Zealand, it’s what we can do with New Zealand that animates the President and I to look at this relationship, and God willing President Clinton will look at this relationship”, the Vice President said to laughter.
