Big deal in Texas as Rangers snag 2 All-Stars

Tate, the top pitcher selected in the 2015 draft, is among three elite prospects entering the Yankees’ minor league system. NY agreed to send Texas cash to offset part of Beltran’s $15 million salary.

Cleveland’s attempt to acquire Lucroy fell apart when he refused to waive the no-trade provision in his contract, but the Indians did make one major move, adding reliever Andrew Miller in a deal with the Yankees.

“I think as a player, you know that this moment could happen.

“Unfortunately, this is what happens in baseball when you get to the point where you’re about to be a free agent, and you’re having a good season, things could happen”, Beltran said to Ryan Hatch of NJ.com.

“This is a really good lineup”.

With the team not going anywhere this season, they made the smart trade Beltran, who will surely help the Rangers and their quest for a World Series this year.

Beltran has batted.281 with 414 home runs in 1,507 regular-season games with Kansas City, Houston, the New York Mets, San Francisco, St. Louis and Yankees. Right fielder Shin-Soo Choo is eligible to come off the disabled list later this week, after dealing with lower-back inflammation. Tate, a righthanded starter and a 2015 first-round draft pick, lost some of his value because of a dip in velocity and, Cashman said, was “an asset at risk”. Venezuelan shortstop Gleyber Torres was obtained from the Chicago Cubs last week in the Chapman deal.

It snared slugger Carlos Beltran from the Yankees and All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy and closer Jeremy Jeffress from the Brewers.

Texas completed the deal Monday, a day after Lucroy blocked a trade that would have sent him to AL Central-leading Cleveland.

Luis “Lulu” Ortiz is 20 years old, and was the top pitching prospect in the Rangers’ organization.

“In this case, we believe being able to acquire two premium prospects in Lewis Brinson and Ortiz was the right way to go, and another player to be named”, Brewers general manager David Stearns said (via Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel). While injuries limited him to 103 games last season, Lucroy has rebounded to his pre-injury form this year. He has been with the Brewers for all six of his major league seasons, hitting.284 in 805 games, and his contract includes a $5.25 million team option for 2017. “Really excited and can’t wait to get after it!” he posted on Twitter. You will always have a special place in our hearts!

To make room on the 40-man roster for Lucroy and Jeffress, the team has designated catcher Bobby Wilson for assignment.

The 21-year-old Green owns a 2-2 record and 4.98 ERA in seven starts with short-season Single-A Spokane. He joins a bullpen that has a high ERA at 4.54, but has a formidable group in recently acquired Dario Alvarez, last years deadline steal in Sam Dyson, another “other guy” in Jake Diekman, reclamation project of Matt Bush, and Japanese “import” of Tony Barnette.

The Astros were 10 games behind Texas on July 29, but the deficit is now 5 1/2 games.
