The Red Sox could be without Dustin Pedroia for the opener against Tampa Bay as the second baseman left the team Sunday to attend the funeral of a family member and may not be back in time for the contest.

Red Sox: RH reliever Koji Uehara (strained chest muscle) is still expected to throw a bullpen session Monday.

One night after almost tying the major league record for consecutive at-bats with a hit, Dustin Pedroia will miss the Boston Red Sox’s series finale against the Kansas City Royals on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.

Kansas City Royals’ Alcides Escobar covers his face as Boston Red Sox’s Mookie Betts (50) rounds second base on his solo home run during the fifth inning of a baseball game in Boston, Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016. Ventura earned a win at home against Boston on May 17, when he surrendered four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

First pitch is at 8:08 p.m. ET because ESPN is weird with broadcasts on.well, ESPN, obviously, and WEEI.

Two batters in, the Red Sox jumped ahead 2-0 on Bogaerts’ 16th homer, a drive that completely left Fenway Park over the Green Monster after Pedroia singled.

It is always nice to see the Sox get a win over a solid team like the Royals, and of course all wins are good wins when a team is in a tough divisional race.

Ortiz never recorded a walk-off RBI in his career on Sunday Night, but he did smack a go-ahead 422-foot home run in the 9th off Joba Chamberlain two seasons ago. “I was going to the bathroom and heard them say it on TV”. But at some point those young players, even though they are young, we’ve got find a way to impact them to where they’re making positive decisions and adjustments in their game.

He will bid to become the first Red Sox pitcher in 70 years to start a season 13-0 at home. Lefty Eduardo Rodriguez (2-5, 5.11) is expected to start for Boston for the first time since leaving his August 16 start at Baltimore after four hitless innings with tightness in his left hamstring.

Right-hander Yordano Ventura (9-9, 4.27 ERA) goes for the red-hot Royals in a prime-time matchup at Fenway Park.
