Big Latch On event promotes breastfeeding awareness

Ms Stephenson said she had received many more supportive comments than negative, while breastfeeding in public. She said she rarely breastfeeds in public. Family, friends, and community members join to support and promote breastfeeding.

The event was created in New Zealand in 2005, and came to the U.S.in 2010 as a way for local and global communities to support, promote, and celebrate breastfeeding.

Yesterday morning, the breastfeeding committee of the Guam Non-Communicable Disease Consortium, in collaboration with the Guam Department of Public Health and Social Services and Sagan Dinana, observed the “3rd Annual Big Latch On” at the Neni & Me, Pure Studio in Tamuning.

While she hadn’t experienced difficulties breastfeeding Lace, it had been a different story with her first child. “It was hard to find support”.

Dr Jennifer Hanratty, a new mum, is hosting the biggest event in Northern Ireland at City Hall, Belfast on Friday and she explained why she wanted to get involved with the event.

Dozens of mothers took part in a world record breastfeeding attempt to try and reduce the stigma of feeding their babies in public.

“I came here to support this”, Edwards said.

According to the national organization’s website, 15,336 breastfeeding women attended last year’s registered events around the world. “I started hosting (the Big Latch On) in my store, and every year it gets larger”.

In the spirit of this celebration, the above bodies carefully select themes that are quite apt in dealing with the need of the season as it relates to breastfeeding.

When asked about her response to the criticism around the issue of breastfeeding Chrissie said that she thinks that “it’s sad the idea that a stranger who thinks that what you are doing is a bit weird is what is going to decide how your child is parented”.

Their exploits were supported locally by Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, with health visitors, midwives and staff also joining events.
