Big lottery jackpot won by someone in New Jersey

Lottery officials announced Sunday morning that a single winning ticket had, indeed, been sold in Mercer County, with the victor looking at a cool $429.5 million payoff.

Saturday night’s drawing of the Powerball numbers managed to match only one ticket.

The winning numbers were 5-25-26-44-66, and Powerball, 9.

An employee of the 7-11 on Chambers Street in Trenton informed The Trentonian on Sunday afternoon via Twitter that “Guess who sold the winning Powerball ticket?” following by a grinning emoji.

As reported by CBS News, New Jersey Lottery executive director Carole Hedinger said in a statement, “Winning the Powerball jackpot is a life-changing event”. It may take longer for the actual victor to come forward.

The single grand prize victor in New Jersey Saturday night will have the third-most valuable lottery ticket ever sold in the United States. This is the largest payout since January, when it was a record of $1.6 billion. But he won $2 — enough to pay for his coffee.

The odds of winning are one in 292.2 million.

“Not this time”, he said, surprised that the store wasn’t that busy with players on Tuesday, when he sold only about 100 tickets in all. The odds of winning the jackpot with a $1 ticket are 1-in-13,983,816. “But it was fun to think about cashing in the winning ticket”.

This isn’t the first time Powerball luck has struck in New Jersey. Interest and sales typically spike when the lack of a victor causes prizes to spiral upward, despite the seemingly astronomical odds of one in 292.2 million.

In Virginia, the million-dollar victor matched the first five numbers and missed only the Powerball number.

The jackpot had been announced at $415 million, but climbed Saturday. Powerball is played in 44 states, Puerto Rico, Washington DC and the US Virgin Islands.
