Big Stone Gap is ready for its closeup, Mr. DeMille
Prior to filming this movie, when was the last time you visited Big Stone Gap? I had relatives come over on the Mayflower, and one granddaddy was a Sicilian immigrant.

So, what was it about rural Virginia that so inspired Trigiani?
Trigiani’s small-town, smaller-stakes tale introduces Ave Maria (Ashley Judd) of Big Stone Gap, Va., an unmarried 40-year-old who doesn’t know where the time’s gone. My mother was a librarian, so I always held books sacrosanct, and didn’t think I could do it. But I tried it and loved it, and here I am, 17 novels later. She cast Ms. Judd and Mr. Wilson as the leads along with accomplished performers such as Whoopi Goldberg as Ave Maria’s straight-talking friend, Anthony LaPaglia as a lawyer with wistful regrets, and Judith Ivey as Jack Mac’s mother who advises: “True love energizes you”.
The movie’s cast and production company will celebrate the movie’s opening with a weekend celebration, a community pancake breakfast, a 5K run on a route of the actual filming locations, a parade through the middle of town with several area bands, floats honoring the movie’s extras and many other themed floats from school, civic and other organizations, all based on people and places depicted in the book and movie. The movie also stars Whoopi Goldberg, Jenna Elfman, Jane Krakowski and Jasmine Guy. When I wrote (the) “Big Stone Gap” (novel), they wanted more, and I gave them more.
“It’s just a attractive, idealistic setting, and I’ve been thinking a lot recently about small towns”.
I love Canadians, but don’t try to sell me that it’s Big Stone Gap.
AT: Well, I definitely captured the feelings and longings people have in the town, but the characters are fictional.
Finding financing and convincing investors she was the right choice to direct “Big Stone Gap” was Trigiani’s biggest challenge.
When she began working on the film, she took a good deal of inspiration from screenwriters who flourished during Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Speaking about today’s announcement, Governor McAuliffe said, “I have seen Adriana Trigiani’s inspiring tribute to her early life in Southwest Virginia, and I can not think of a better example of why our film industry is such an essential part of our efforts to build a new Virginia economy”. “Patrick was in his 20s”. When someone cooks or bakes something in their home and offers it to you, to me, it’s symbolic of them giving you their heart.
“Thirteen years later, she had passed away, cameras rolled and Patrick was 40”. Ashley Judd plays Ave Maria. She’d have me over every Saturday for gardening lessons. She was a delight and had great ideas. “As an actor, he is prepared, nuanced and surprising. Everything she is shows up in her work”. Despite a few of the hairstyles-and a conservative Virginia’s notably relaxed attitude about birth control pills and the town thespian’s homosexuality-the year is 1978.
Ave Maria feels like she’s just going to have to settle, and not get anything she really wants. “But it was about the nuts-and-bolts, too”.
AT: Well, I’ve been told that all of my female protagonists in my books are always strong. “They were so happy we were there bringing life to their town and their story”. “You will feel redeemed and feel hope again”.

AT: I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Patrick Wilson coming in at the end! I remember how they looked out for one another and supported one another when times were tough. At 15, she went to work as a news reporter for WNVA Radio. I very much appreciate that I go back and forth between movies like “Divergent” and “Insurgent” but at the same time, I get to make movies like “Bug”.
