Big Sur Fire Grows to More Than 100 Square Miles
Hundreds of homes are under evacuation orders and thousands are threatened by a surging wildfire in the San Bernardino Mountains near Hesperia.

More than two weeks since the Soberanes wildfire began with an illegal campfire near Big Sur, the blaze is 50 percent contained, CalFire officials said Monday night.
An army of more than 5,000 firefighters and an air force of tankers and helicopters made progress, however, surrounding 50 percent of the almost three-week old fire. More temporary closures could follow.
All other previous evacuation orders and warnings remain in effect.
Evacuation orders remain in effect for Coast Road south of the 2-mile marker to Highway 1 at Andrew Molera Park.
LOS ANGELES A wildfire burning out of control in mountains and foothills east of Los Angeles mushroomed more than 50 percent overnight, forcing authorities to order three school districts to cancel classes due to heavy smoke and risky conditions.
No homes have yet burned and no one has been injured by the blaze that broke out on Sunday. The Apple Valley Unified School District is also closed Tuesday due to poor air quality.

Almost 400 homes are under evacuation orders, and authorities have recommended voluntary evacuation of many other residences.
