“I made a couple of mistakes but apart from that, I felt like ball-striking-wise, it was a good day, ” McIlroy said. A year ago, McIlroy slung his 3-iron into the water left of the eighth hole out of frustration.
It remains to be seen if McIlroy will debut this stroke in competition at Trump National Doral this week, but it certainly is something to keep an eye on.

“I’ve been out here nine years now and they still couldn’t get my name right”, he later deadpanned. So if it’s a last-minute jaunt there, it would still be awesome.
Didn’t make cut: Hunter Mahan, Ian Poulter, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood are among those who failed to qualify for the Cadillac Championship this year.

The world No 1 romped to victory at last year’s Masters as he posted a record-equalling score of 18 under par, although the greens in particular were softer and slower than in previous seasons. Poulter had not missed this event since 2004. Meanwhile, Watson is a big hitter that has finished inside the top-three at this tournament in three of the last four years. Mahan had played at Doral every year since 2008….
