Big three grouped together in Miami

American Scott Piercy notched four birdies through his first five holes and leads the field at the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral on Thursday.

“I made a couple of mistakes but apart from that, I felt like ball-striking-wise, it was a good day, ” McIlroy said. A year ago, McIlroy slung his 3-iron into the water left of the eighth hole out of frustration.

It remains to be seen if McIlroy will debut this stroke in competition at Trump National Doral this week, but it certainly is something to keep an eye on.

Now it’s about politics. “This is not a political question at all”, the reporter followed up with.

“I’m trying to battle my own”, McIlroy said.

“They put Humpty Dumpty back together again so I’m able now to hit a golf shot”, he said.

“From probably when I was 13 until I was about 24, 25, I would go back and forth all the time between regular and cross-handed”, he continued. It is…it’s shocking.

“I can’t vote, and if I were to vote I’m not sure I would want to vote for any of the candidates”.

McIlroy’s primary residence is about 90 minutes north in Jupiter.

Day admitted the atmosphere was not as big as he expected.

“There’s nothing different about the golf course”. He said the conversation lasted about 50 minutes. At the time, he said, “Where’s the light at the end of the tunnel?” “It didn’t matter how bad it was”. If it was a course that he did not like, he was just going to flat-out execute. Tiger would go three better (66) in an inspiring duel to take the title by a stroke.

No. 1-ranked Spieth has paid the price of a whirlwind, worldwide schedule during golf’s so-called offseason, leaving him admittedly tired.

Jordan Spieth won the fight on Thursday.

Day is not anxious about his slow start. “It was nice to try and get into a rhythm together because the last few weeks have been a little rough on all three of us”.

DIVOTS: Scott, last week’s victor at The Honda Classic, started eagle-bogey-bogey before settling down and shooting 68…. Willett already is eligible – he is No. 15 in the world.

Piercy said he knows what he’s up against for the next three days. The Australian was one-under for his opening nine before a 14-foot birdie putt at the second took him to two under.

“I’ve been out here nine years now and they still couldn’t get my name right”, he later deadpanned. So if it’s a last-minute jaunt there, it would still be awesome.

Didn’t make cut: Hunter Mahan, Ian Poulter, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood are among those who failed to qualify for the Cadillac Championship this year.

The world No 1 romped to victory at last year’s Masters as he posted a record-equalling score of 18 under par, although the greens in particular were softer and slower than in previous seasons. Poulter had not missed this event since 2004. Meanwhile, Watson is a big hitter that has finished inside the top-three at this tournament in three of the last four years. Mahan had played at Doral every year since 2008….
