SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – Simone Biles wouldn’t let herself believe it.

Any drama about the final five waned early Sunday night at the Olympic Trials, as Gabby Douglas paired a clutch vault with a almost flawless uneven bars routine to cement her chance to defend her first-place all-around finish at the 2012 London Games.

Leading the pack will be Simone Biles, who is already a legend in her sport with three consecutive world championships all-around titles.

Beaten to the line by 0.01 seconds for third place by a diving Jenna Prandini, Felix finished fourth in the 200 meters in Eugene, Ore., and will not be able to defend her title.

Tori Bowie and Deajah Stevens finished first and second.

The 18-year-old posted a score of 15.750 on uneven bars during the first night of Olympic Trials on Friday night.

Douglas entered Sunday seventh in the standings, but turned in near-flawless performances in the vault and uneven bars to work her way into the top five. She’s a former 10,000-meter national champion who was one of the pre-race favorites at the trials in that event.

“I want be like her when I grow up”, said the 23-year-old Spencer.

Nine months ago, Douglas’ comeback trajectory since taking time off after the Olympics seemed on course, propelling her onto the world team and into second place in the all-around competition behind Biles.

The Rider graduate was sitting eighth with three events remaining in the heptathlon heading into the final day of the U.S. Olympic Trials.

In the same article, Carpenter said that she didn’t hesitate to take on the challenge of coaching such a high-profile gymnast.

Also Sunday, Patricia Mamona – a former two-time NCAA triple jump champion at Clemson – qualified to represent her native Portugal in the Olympics after winning the European Championship.

This was the first time three women have score over 6400 points at a USA championship/Olympic trials.

Felix said her injured right ankle was more or less the same as it has been all week.

There will be no Olympic double for Allyson Felix. If the conditions are better in the Olympics, Suhr is confident she can go higher in Rio. Though hardly surprising after she won the US junior championship a year ago, Hernandez’s past month of competition has been impressive as she has shown she belongs with the top gymnasts in the world.
