Biles to carry US flag into closing ceremony

Nineteen-year-old gymnast Simone Biles, who won five medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics, served as the United States’ flag bearer at Sunday’s Closing Ceremony.

Biles marked her Olympic debut with gold in the team and individual all-round, vault and floor exercise, while also taking bronze on the balance beam.

Biles is the second gymnast to serve as the USA flag bearer in either an opening or closing ceremony.

In total, athletes from 34 states and Washington, D.C., have earned medals at this year’s Olympics. She also went on to thank the host city, Rio de Janeiro for putting up an “incredible” show.

The Olympic flame was extinguished and the party within the stadium began full-on as the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro came to an end.

Talk about making history: The U.S. women’s basketball team won the gold medal, the team’s sixth consecutive one in Olympic competition, burying Spain 101-72.

It’s a huge honor for an athlete to win a gold medal in the Olympics.

Michael Phelps was the American flag bearer for the opening ceremony.

Going into the final day of the 2016 Olympics, the USA leads the medal count with 116 total medals, 43 gold, 37 silver and 36 bronze. She joined other USA women as they took home 27 gold medals overall.

Team USA announced her selection as flag bearer on Twitter Saturday.

Biles is the most decorated US female gymnast of all-time with 14 world championships.

It’s perhaps an even bigger honor to be chosen by your teammates to carry your nation’s flag during the closing ceremony.

Her success here only added to the consensus that she’s the best gymnast of her time and probably the best ever.
