Bill Belichick acknowledges Tom Coughlin as his Giants tenure ends

We’ve been friends a long time, and I’m sad, but I’m happy because it’s a new adventure.

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin (C) waves to fans while walking off the field after the game against the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium. Although like every coach, Coughlin had struggles.

However, the Giants missed out on the playoffs for the fourth consecutive campaign this year, in addition to posting a third straight losing season for the first time since a run of eight between 1973-80.

Coughlin’s career National Football League coaching record is 170-150 with a 12-7 record in playoff games.

Coughlin was handed the job in 2004 following a nine-year stint at the Jacksonville Jaguars and went on to enjoy huge success over his 12-year tenure, including winning two Super Bowl championships.

Coughlin’s Giants spoiled a ideal season for Belichick’s Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, only to defeat them again four years later in Super Bowl XLVI.

While injuries played a part in New York’s disappointing season, it was also apparent the team didn’t have the talent to match up with other teams at times. They lost 8 of those games by a total of 26 points.

The 69-year-old, two-time Super Bowl victor and future Pro Football Hall of Fame coach is expected to meet with Mara and Tisch. The Giants won in another upset, 21-17. He established a players’ leadership committee and morphed into a more accessible leader who helped his teams bond.

Earlier Monday, Giants players gathered in the locker room to clean out their lockers. I knew I would beat you then.

Clearly the question was related to Saints coach Sean Payton (although no names were named), a former Giants offensive coordinator and prime candidate to replace Coughlin should the Saints be willing to let him walk for some light (second round?) compensation.

“He definitely has not failed these players”, Manning said, fighting back tears. “We failed him. I learned so much from him. And we will continue to do that and we will do that”.

“…No one worked harder, no one demanded more and I LOVE YOU for it”, wrote Tuck in an Instagram post.

Giants co-owner John Mara lauded Coughlin as everything the organization could have wanted.

The Giants have not yet revealed who will replace Coughlin.

“I think he has done a great job, ” said Manning on Monday. Remember, when we lose, I lose. “I think with the guys we have and add a few guys, we can be a strong offense”.
