Bill Belichick on Chip Kelly’s Firing: Former Eagles “aren’t really doing too”
Bill Belichick clearly wanted to show his support for friend and fired Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly on Thursday. Johnson complimented Kelly, but he also acknowledged underlying problems and the internal turmoil that ensued.

“I think anywhere you are there’s pros and cons to the way you do things”, quarterback Sam Bradford said. In college, the toughest part is managing the superstars. “It’s going to rub people the wrong way”. After dramatic offseason changes, it was clear the roster had problems.
Going forward, I think a much more collaborative approach between player personnel and coaching is the way to go. “I just think it didn’t work out for him in certain places”.
Chip Kelly was on vacation in Hilton Head, S.C. when Chip Kelly was sacked. Just a lot of tension up there that didn’t need to happen, because when you throw it up there it does trickle down to the team, and the team knows what’s going on. “Ultimately, it doesn’t work that way because those guys are employed by him and [Jeffrey] Lurie”. Bigger guys like me, it’s harder on your joints. “I have a lot of respect for them”. “You’ve got to open your heart to players and everybody you want to achieve peak performance”, he said. Johnson offered an idea of what Lurie meant from a player’s perspective.
“Maybe the ego got in the way”, Johnson said. “I think Chip had good intentions”.
Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson, who was Kelly’s first draft pick, said the former coach was considered “unapproachable” by many players. “It’s just that there were some difficulties in coming out and saying what he needed to say”.
“I haven’t talked to him”, Ertz said. “Obviously you want a great leader, you want somebody that knows the game obviously very well, someone that can relate to the players, somebody the players can trust”. The future is uncertain right now. He isn’t expected to play Sunday against the Giants. “That’s all I’m focused on”.
Until this point, Kelly had said it was Lurie’s decision – not his – to oversee all player moves. Lurie admitted Kelly did not lose the room as well. Bradford said that the players must take “a lot” of responsibility for Kelly’s departure, and that Kelly is a good coach.
Kelly’s Eagles won 35-28 at New England earlier this month.
“I feel like it’s time”, he said at the time. That’s how he found out Kelly was out.

Over the next week, the owner plans on meeting with all of his players, a process that he said has already started with a players-only meeting on Wednesday. The Titans fired coach Ken Whisenhunt, who had a 3-20 record, in the middle of the Heisman Trophy winner’s rookie season and named Mike Mularkey as interim coach. They don’t like playing in his system. “But I had no idea it would be Chip or not, and didn’t expect it to be last night”.
